Beijing: India and China must prioritise mutual support and each other’s achievements rather than suspicion and alienation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi after he meets with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing on Monday. Misri is on a two-day visit to Beijing.
Misri’s visit marked the second high-profile visit by Indian officials after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited China last month for the 23rd meeting of the Special Representatives of India and China.
Misri and Yi discuss the progress made between India and China
After his meeting with Misri, the Chinese foreign minister pointed out the progress made by the two sides since the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met last year on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan.
“The two sides should seize the opportunity, meet each other halfway, explore more substantive measures, and commit to mutual understanding, mutual support, and mutual achievement,” Wang said, as per the release shared by the Chinese foreign ministry. He added, “The improvement and development of China-India relations is fully in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples.”
Both sides review implementation of agreements
During their meeting, both Misri and Yi also discussed implementing agreements reached by Modi and Jinping, taking steps for further stability in China-India ties, among others. The Foreign Secretary is also scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong for further bilateral discussions. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had framed Misri’s visit to China as part of a bilateral mechanism to further improve economic, political, and people-to-people contacts.
“The resumption of this bilateral mechanism flows from the agreement at the leadership level to discuss the next steps for India-China relations, including in the political, economic, and people-to-people domains,” the MEA had said in a brief statement.
