Bijnor: Samajwadi Party MLA Mehboob Ali has landed in soup over his purported remarks that the population of Muslims is rising in India and it would pave the way for the BJP’s exit from Uttar Pradesh in the 2027 assembly elections. The remarks have triggered a major controversy with Ali’s party distancing itself from its legislator’s views.
Meanwhile, the UP Police lodged a case over charges of “promoting enmity and hatred between Hindus and Muslims based on religion” against the MLA and Bijnor SP chief Shaikh Zakir Hussain in the district over the remarks.
Ali, the MLA from Amroha and former minister during the previous SP-led government, was addressing a public event in Bijnor on Sunday when he said the “Muslim population is rising in UP by 2027, it will lead to the end of BJP’s rule and the Samajwadi Party will come to power.

Drawing a parallel between the BJP and the Mughal Empire, he remarked, “If the Mughals, who ruled for over 800 years, are no longer here, what makes you think the BJP will last?” He also accused the BJP of being “anti-Constitution and anti-reservation.”
Several videos of the MLA’s remarks went viral on social media, drawing sharp reactions with the BJP demanding answers from Akhilesh Yadav. “Is this why (Samajwadi Party chief) Akhilesh Yadav is busy dividing Hindus? So that a particular community’s wish is fulfilled?” UP BJP’s general secretary Subrat Pathak said.
Reacting to the controversy, Samajwadi Party leader Sunil Sajan distanced the party from Mehboob Ali’s statement that the BJP would be defeated due to the rise in the Muslim population. However, he pointed out, “What is true is that inflation, unemployment, and BJP’s corruption have all increased. Their lies, hate-driven politics, and inaction on serious issues have grown… the borders are insecure, states are in turmoil, and the Prime Minister remains silent. As a result, a large segment of the population is eager to see the BJP defeated. Their time in power is limited.”
