New Delhi: Tensions escalated in Dhuliyan town, situated in the Jangipur subdivision of Murshidabad district. This was followed by violence that erupted during a protest against the Waqf Amendment Act. Visuals from the area showed unrest, that led to the deployment of security forces. Officials have ensured that the situation is now under control, and efforts to calm the situation are ongoing to prevent any further distress.
Murshidabad has experienced deadly violence during the protests over the Waqf Act, which resulted in mass panic, fatalities, and migration. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an investigation into the matter. Amid this unrest, celebrations for Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year) were also cancelled in many places.
Two brothers arrested for murdering father-son duo
The West Bengal Police on Tuesday arrested two brothers for their alleged involvement in the murder of a father-son duo during the violence in Murshidabad district. The two accused are identified as Kalu Nadar and Dildar Nadar. Both of them were residents of the same Jafrabad area where the father and son used to live. A special investigation team has been formed to probe into the case.
NHRC takes cognisance of violence, to send team for on-spot inquiry
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of the violence that occurred in Murshidabad, West Bengal, during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. On Tuesday, the NHRC announced it would send a team to conduct an on-site inquiry due to the “seriousness” of the situation. This decision follows the submission of a complaint to the commission. The NHRC stated that the inquiry report should be submitted within three weeks. The complaint refers to various social media news articles that highlight the alleged murder of a father and son during the ongoing protests against the legislation.
In the aftermath of this violence, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals, authorities have taken strict actions. Around 1,093 social media accounts have been blocked and 221 individuals who were involved in spreading misinformation and inciting unrest were arrested. Reports have also shown that Bangladeshi radicals may have been aided by local leaders of a political party to carry out the violence.
