Mumbai: Online payment frauds, causing people to lose their hard-earned money have been rising with rise in the use of online payment methods. In a recent incident, A 19-year-old boy lost over Rs 15 lakh on a phishing website which claimed to offer him a rental flat near his college. The boy who is pursuing a course of business management from a leading institute in Vile Parle, was looking for a flat near his college to avoid commuting daily.
The boy has been identified as Deepak Chavan. As per the information provided by Kharghar police, the boy was searching for a rental flat near his college through internet. He found a website which assured him of getting him a flat once he pays the initial amount of Rs 10,000 as a security deposit. The boy agreed to book the flat. He got a QR code asking him to make the payment.
Website kept sending multiple accounts
When he paid the amount on the OR code given, the website showed that the payment has been failed. When he made a second transaction, it was also reported as unsuccessful. After this the website asked the boy to make a combined payment. When the combined payment also failed, the website kept on sending him different accounts to transfer the money. The website also ensured that the amount which is debited would be returned if they do not find suitable accommodation.
Were savings of his father
This process started on September 24, and kept on going until October 13. By this time the boy has already made payment to 10 different accounts of the website. The money which the boy was having in his account, were the saving his father saved in his name. When the boy finally realised that the website is not going to return his money back and the website was a scam, he approached Kharghar police and registered a case.
Kharghar police registered a complaint under section 66(D) punishment for impersonation of Information Technology Act 2000 and Section of 318(2) (4) and 319 (2) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.
