New Delhi: Mumbai has reported its first fatality due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), with the death of a 53-year-old patient at Nair Hospital. The total number of GBS-related deaths has now reached eight.
The deceased, a resident of Wadala, was employed as a ward boy at BMC’s BN Desai Hospital. According to Dr Shailesh Mohite, Dean of Nair Hospital, the patient had been critically ill for several days and was receiving intensive treatment on a ventilator before succumbing to the illness.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl from Palghar, currently studying in class 10, has been admitted to Nair Hospital with GBS symptoms. She remains under medical observation. In Pune, the number of suspected and confirmed GBS cases has risen to 197, with five new cases detected, health department officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Among these, 172 cases have been formally diagnosed as GBS. The distribution includes 40 cases from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 92 from newly added villages in the PMC, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad, 28 from Pune Rural, and eight from other districts.

While 104 patients have been discharged, 50 remain in ICU and 20 are on ventilator support. The death toll in the Pune region remains at seven.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs, and, in severe cases, difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
