Mumbai: The Mumbai Police detained a person for allegedly threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The suspect was nabbed from the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. He had reportedly issued a threat to the prime minister last Saturday.
As per the police, the suspect had sent hoax threats after he was fired from his job after showing up in his office in an abbreviated state. The man, identified as Mirza Mohammed Beig, was brought to Mumbai for questioning. Hailing from Jharkhand, he worked at a private company in Palanpur, Gujarat.
Police received a warning on Saturday
On Saturday, the Mumbai Police received a WhatsApp message warning about bomb blasts. The message also claimed that weapons to ‘assassinate’ the Prime Minister had entered the country. It also named individuals who were allegedly linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). According to the police, the suspect had sent two threatening messages — one to Jharkhand police and another to the Mumbai Police.
While, the police swung into action, immediately after receiving the message, it was unable to contact the sender as the suspect had switched off his mobile phone after sending the messages police tracked the number to Ajmer, with the help of technical surveillance.
The accused was apprehended from Rajasthan’s Ajmer
The accused was apprehended outside Ajmer railway station. He had come to Ajmer from Palanpur by train and was about to board another train to Jharkhand when the police took him in custody.
The suspect has been booked under section 351 (3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation. “We will look at the exact motive and verify the suspect’s claims once he is brought to Mumbai for questioning,” An officer said.
