Drishti Verma from Theog and Abhishek from Haryana’s Ambala are the two victims who have been identified. On Saturday night, after rescue operation, Verma was pulled out from the debris, but she breathed her last at the Sohana Hospital. On Sunday morning, Abhishek’s body was recovered from the debris.
A senior official informed reporters that excavation work was being carried out on an adjacent plot of the building without any permission from the building’s owner. Police have registered a case for culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the building’s owners – Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been overseeing the progress of rescue operation via phone. In a social media post, he assured that action would be taken against those responsible and urged the public to cooperate.
He said, “Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration.”
