The ongoing violence in Manipur has prompted the state government to take drastic measures. Following widespread protests sparked by the tragic deaths of two Meitei teenagers, the government has declared a 5-day internet shutdown, effective immediately.
Manipur Government’s Immediate Response to Escalating Violence
The protests were triggered after the murder of the Meitei students who had gone missing on July 6. Students took to the streets, demanding justice and condemning the heinous act. The state government, in a bid to restore calm and control the situation, issued a notification announcing the suspension of mobile internet data services and internet services running through VPN in Manipur’s territorial jurisdiction until 7.45 pm on October 1, 2023.
This move comes after Chief Minister N Biren Singh had lifted the internet ban in Manipur on September 23, approximately five months after its initial imposition on May 3.
