Imphal: A high alert has been sounded in Manipur in the wake of an intelligence input regarding infiltration of “over 900 Kuki militants” from neighbouring Myanmar in the state. The Security Adviser to the Manipur government, Kuldiep Singh, confirmed the intelligence report and said that security forces have taken several measures to counter any possible threat.
Addressing a press conference, Singh said that the militants can carry out violence any day around September 28 and asserted that efforts are being taken to counter any such attacks. Districts bordering Myanmar including Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul, Kamjong, and Pherzawl have been placed on high alert.
According to the intelligence input, dated September 16, over 900 Kuki militants, “trained in the use of drone-based bombs, projectiles, missiles and jungle warfare” have entered Manipur from Myanmar. Believed to be grouped in units of 30 members each, the militants are “scattered in the periphery”, and are “likely to launch coordinated attacks” on Meitei villages around September 28, the report said.
‘Precautionary measures to counter potential threats’
The Manipur security adviser said that they believe the report to be “100 per cent correct” and are treating the “alarming” development with “utmost seriousness”, implementing necessary precautionary measures to counter potential threats. He said that secuirty agencies are focusing on tackling drone and rocket attacks, detecting explosives and materials used in making bombs, rockets, missiles, drone components, and batteries, and keeping a close watch on group movements of 30 or more militants, including their potential shelters.
To ensure that any militant movements are “nipped in the bud”, security agencies in remote areas have been communicated about the planned measures, said Singh. “District magistrates have been alerted. All connected roads and villages within a 5 km radius towards the hills are also being checked,” he said.
Singh said that Assam Rifles and Army have deployed a large number of such anti-drone systems, and CRPF too have deployed some anti-drone guns.
