Imphal: As the tensions continued in parts of Manipur, the state government on Monday ordered the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts for the next two days. The step has been taken to prevent the miscreants from sharing contents that may affect the law and order situation in the state.
The suspension of mobile internet facilities and mobile data services will continue till 5.15 pm on November 27. The tensions have increased in Manipur in the last few days following the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children recently.
What the order of the Manipur Government said
“The state government after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation has decided to continue the suspension of mobile internet services and mobile data services including VSATs and VPN services in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam and Pherzawl of Manipur for another two days,” the order issued by the government said.
The state government had earlier enforced the internet ban in seven districts of the state on November 16. The state later extended the internet ban to Jiribam and Pherzawl districts also. Notably, the state has been witnessing tensions since last year, which has not only claimed the lives of over 250 people and displaced thousands.
Women defied curfew order in Imphal East
Meanwhile, thousands of women defied curfew orders and held a rally in the state’s Imphal East district demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state. The rally was organised by local clubs and Meira Paibis. During their protests, the women held placards calling to “stop imposition of the draconian law” and “stop killing of women and children” in the state.
The rally, which started from Kongba Bazaar, was stopped after 3 km by security forces at Konung Mamang. The protesters returned to Kongba for a public meeting later.
