Earlier in January, a 20-year-old food worker in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad was arrested for allegedly spitting on the food he was preparing. In December last year, a similar incident occurred in Bulandshahr, and a vegetable vendor was arrested.
Two ordinances planned
In October 2024, UP government authorities proposed a stringent 10-year imprisonment for spitting in food, a punishment generally reserved for crimes such as attempted murder or rape. Officials pointed out that the state plans to implement this by bringing two ordinances: one to penalise the “contamination” of food with human waste, and another requiring all eateries to display nameplates with details of their owners and staff. The ordinances, which were reviewed by the Uttar Pradesh cabinet, also suggested the scrapping of licenses for those found contaminating food by mixing urine or waste.
A government statement quoting chief minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Contaminating food with human waste and dirty matter is a grave offence and we will bring a strong law soon.”
