New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has emerged from Assam’s Guwahati, a 40-year-old man was found living with his deceased mother’s skeleton for three months, offering her food and performing daily prayers. The police discovered the skeletal remains of 75-year-old Purnima Devi at their home in the Jyotikuchi area after neighbours grew suspicious due to a foul smell and the woman’s prolonged absence.
According to reports, Purnima Devi had been living with her son, Jaydeep Dey, since the death of her husband, who worked for the railways. The two lived a reclusive life, rarely interacting with neighbours. Their household was sustained by Purnima’s pension. However, over time, neighbours noticed that the elderly woman had not been seen for several months, and a strong odour began emanating from the house.
Neighbours alert police after suspicion
When concerned neighbours questioned Jaydeep about his mother’s whereabouts, he casually informed them that she had passed away months ago. However, when asked about her last rites, his indifferent response raised suspicions. He claimed that he had not informed anyone about her death because he could not find anyone to clean the house. The neighbours then alerted the police, who arrived and recovered Purnima’s skeletal remains from inside the house.
Police investigations revealed that Jaydeep, who is suspected to be suffering from mental health issues, had been living with his mother’s body since her death. He had been placing food near her remains, along with an image of Lord Shiva and a lit lamp, seemingly believing that his mother would be revived through divine intervention.
Neighbours describe the man as odd and having aggressive behaviour
A neighbour stated that Jaydeep was known for his odd and aggressive behaviour, and many people avoided interaction with him. It was also revealed that during his father’s lifetime, Jaydeep had abused him, and he often scolded his mother when she tried to speak with others. In recent months, the house had remained locked, and Jaydeep provided conflicting explanations when asked about his mother’s whereabouts. To some, he said she was unwell, while to others, he claimed she was fine but uninterested in leaving the house.
Following the discovery of the body, the police detained Jaydeep for questioning. Forensic experts were called to examine the scene, and an autopsy of the skeletal remains is scheduled to determine the exact cause and time of death. Authorities are also questioning Jaydeep’s maternal uncle and grandmother as part of the ongoing investigation.
