Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dedicated a party event to the victim of rape and murder at the RG Kar Medical College. The event was the foundation day of the Trinamool’s students wing, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
Mamata Banerjee offers heartfelt condolences to family of rape victim
Speaking at the Trinamool event, the West Bengal CM remembered the PG medical student who was brutally raped and killed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In a post on social media platform ‘X’ she wrote, “Today I dedicate Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to our sister, whom we mourned the tragic loss of at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago.”
She further paid her condolences to the family of the victim, calling her ‘sister’. She said that her family as well as the Bengal government was seeking speedy justice for her and for all the women of all ages across India who have been subjected to such inhumane acts.
Banerjee then went on to remind students that they have a great social role and responsibility. She said, ” It is the task of student society to give the dream of a new day by keeping the society and culture awake and to inspire everyone around with the bright vows of a new day.”
She appealed to the students to stay committed to the cause of social justice and encouraged them to work with full dedication towards this goal. She then went on to pray for the students well being, good health and bright future.
The appeal by the CM comes just a day after the Kolkata Police fired teargas shells and water cannons at the protesting students at the Nabanna protest on Tuesday. The BJP was quick to target the CM and the TMC government over the police action. In fact they have called a separate Bangla Bandh on Wednesday to protest the alleged high-handedness of the authorities.
