New Delhi: The ruling Mahayuti alliance’s seat-sharing deal for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections is almost sealed. Discussions about seat-sharing in the Mahayuti have reached final stage. There’s a consensus among the three parties on approximately 200 seats and on the remaining 88 seats, talks and negotiations are underway, sources said.
According to sources, not only BJP but all the three parties will repeat almost all the sitting MLAs. Parties want to avoid rebellion.
What’s the seat-sharing formula?
Union home minister Amit Shah helped finalise the alliance’s seat-sharing formula during his two-day Maharashtra tour. The BJP is expected to fight 155-160 seats, while chief minister Ekanath Shinde-led Shiv Sena will contest 80-85 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party is expected to get around 55-60 seats.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday indicated that all the three parties will be contesting the seats they had won in the last assembly elections in 2019.
Meanwhile, a meeting of Mahayuti leaders is to be held in Mumbai late tonight, and in this meeting, the remaining seats will be discussed. The Election Commission team is also arriving in Mumbai late tonight.
On Friday, the EC team will meet all the political parties and hold a meeting with the officials. On September 28, the Election Commission will hold a press conference at 4:30 pm in Mumbai. After this, the situation regarding elections in Maharashtra will become clear and the poll dates will be announced.
Earlier, during his two-day tour of the state, Amit Shah held region-wise meetings with Mahayuti leaders in Vidarbha, Marathwada, western and northern Maharashtra. On Tuesday, in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Shah held a meeting with Shinde and Pawar to discuss about the seats which are disputed. He also spoke to BJP leaders to brainstorm the strategy for Vidarbha and Marathwada.
Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has reportedly requested 107 of 288 seats for the assembly elections in Maharashtra. According to some reports, Shinde had submitted a proposal to the BJP high command. Shinde reportedly wants a direct fight with Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. He is seeking maximum number of seats in Mumbai, Thane, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
