Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government is all set to bring a new law against the ‘Love Jihad’ cases in the state. A seven-member committee has also been formed to assess the legislation under the Director General of Police (DGP)
The committee will probe the various instances of cases related to Love Jehad and prepare a report, which will be submitted to the state government after it is completed. After getting the report the state government will take further action as per the need. The other members of the committee include secretaries of departments of women and child development, minority development, social justice, law and judiciary, and special assistance and home.
The law against ‘Love Jihad’ is a long-time promise of Mahayuti Govt
It may be noted that the law against ‘Love Jihad’ has been promised by the state’s Mahayuti Government for a long time. In October last year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted over one lakh such case cases relating to the conspiracy in which Hindu women were allegedly forced to marry after providing wrong identifications.
What the state government’s order said
“Various organisations in the State and some citizens submitted representations regarding enacting a law to prevent love jihad and fraudulent or forced conversions. Some States in India have also enacted laws to prevent love jihad and fraudulent or forced conversions,” the order said.
It added, “It was under the consideration of the government to study the existing situation in Maharashtra and suggest measures regarding the complaints received regarding love jihad and fraudulent or forced conversions, to study the law of other states and prepare a draft of the law and to form a special committee to study legal matters. Accordingly, a special committee is being formed under the chairpersonship of the Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, Mumbai,” a government order issued on Friday stated.
