Mumbai: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde met Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and submitted his resignation following the assembly election results. The governor requested Shinde to continue as caretaker chief minister until a new CM is sworn in, as the ruling Mahayuti coalition remains undecided on its choice for the post after its landslide victory.
Shinde was accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar during his visit to Raj Bhavan. The term of the outgoing Maharashtra assembly is set to end on 26 November.
The three leaders are now expected to hold a press conference to announce the next line of work by their Mahayuti government and the day of the swearing-in ceremony besides deciding on the new chief minister of the state.
Deepak Kesarkar, a minister in Shinde’s cabinet, confirmed to reporters that the resignation had been tendered and that the governor had asked Shinde to serve as caretaker CM. He added that the new government would be sworn in at the earliest.
Despite the Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—securing a decisive victory with 230 seats in the 288-member assembly, the coalition’s leaders have yet to reach a consensus on the next chief minister.
