New Delhi: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP national president JP Nadda met Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday to discuss portfolio allocation in the newly formed BJP-led Mahayuti government. The meeting took place amidst ongoing suspense within the ruling coalition over the distribution of key ministries among its constituents—BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP.
The meeting highlight the brewing challenges over cabinet formation, as coalition partners Shiv Sena and NCP jostle for key ministerial portfolios. according to reports, the high-profile home ministry, previously held by Fadnavis, is a major point of contention. The Shinde-led Sena faction is demanding the home portfolio as compensation for relinquishing the chief minister’s post, but BJP insiders suggest the party is unwilling to let go of this critical department.
Sena may be offered the urban development, public works
Instead, the Sena may be offered the urban development, public works, and revenue ministries. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s NCP has reportedly staked its claim for the finance portfolio, citing a superior strike rate in the recent elections. However, the Sena is also eyeing the finance ministry, intensifying the dispute.
A tentative agreement reached earlier outlined a division of 22 portfolios for the BJP, 12 for the Sena, and nine for the NCP. The final distribution must be finalised before the new assembly convenes on December 16, leaving limited time for negotiations.
Internal discontent within the Shiv Sena too
Amid these developments, there are signs of internal discontent within the Shiv Sena too. Party MLAs have raised concerns about the inaccessibility and performance of three former ministers from Konkan, western Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Deputy chief minister Shinde has been urged to exclude them from the new cabinet.
Shinde, who did not accompany Fadnavis to Delhi, is focusing on addressing party grievances. His office clarified that he was not scheduled to participate in cabinet-related talks.
The cabinet expansion is expected to be completed by December 14, ahead of the winter session of the state legislature. CM Fadnavis has reassured coalition partners that all decisions will be made in consultation.
