Chamoli: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the avalanche that struck Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on February 28, claiming the lives of eight laborers. The SDM of Jyotirmath has been appointed as the officer in charge of this investigation.
The massive avalanche in Chamoli district resulted in 54 laborers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) going missing. In response, more than 200 personnel from various agencies, including the disaster management authority, ITBP, BRO, NDRF, SDRF, IAF, district administration, health department, and fire brigade, were deployed for the rescue operation. Among the missing laborers, 46 were rescued alive, while eight were found dead.
Magisterial inquiry ordered
Chamoli district magistrate (DM) Sandeep Tiwari ordered the magisterial inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the avalanche accident. The SDM of Jyotirmath has been appointed as the investigating officer to ensure a thorough examination of the incident. The inquiry aims to identify the causes of the avalanche and recommend measures to prevent such disasters in the future.

Chamoli chief medical officer (CMO) Abhishek Gupta confirmed the death toll and provided details about the postmortem of all these bodies has been completed, and the documents have been submitted to the police. The police have moved all the bodies.
Advanced technology was used in search
To aid the search operation, a Drone-Based Intelligent Buried Object Detection System was brought to Jyotirmath and deployed at the avalanche site in Mana. This advanced technology helped locate the missing laborers more efficiently. The magisterial inquiry into the Chamoli avalanche that claimed the lives of eight laborers highlights the importance of understanding and preventing such natural disasters. As the investigation proceeds, it is hoped that valuable insights will be gained to enhance disaster preparedness and response in the region.
