Roorkee: A case of rats being found in the mess food has emerged at IIT Roorkee in Uttarakhand, causing an uproar among students. Rats were discovered in the food items at Radha-Krishna Bhawan, including the pan, rice, and other provisions.
This led to a commotion in the mess, and more than 400 students were left hungry. Photos and videos of the incident are circulating on social media. The administration has issued a statement, promising an investigation into the matter.
Students noticed the rats inside the kitchen
On Thursday, when lunch was being prepared in the mess of Radha-Krishna Bhawan at IIT Roorkee, students noticed rats jumping in the vegetable pan and cooker. They recorded a video, called other students, and created a commotion in the mess.

Students created a ruckus in IIT Roorkee
Students expressed their resentment that despite being a well-known institute of the country, cleanliness is not maintained in the kitchen of mess here. Moreover, consuming this food can cause infections making students ill also. This outrage led to the student protesting against the administration. Agitated students also raised slogans against the institute and also had an argument with the staff who prepared the food. Although the staff kept explaining to the students, the students did not listen to anyone and they created a ruckus.
Investigation is on in this matter
According to the Sonika Srivastava, media cell in-charge, IIT Roorkee, “When the information has been received about rats being found in the kitchen of Radha Krishna Bhawan mess, immediate investigation has been started in this matter. Besides, instructions have been given to comply with hygiene standards. Additionally, some external experts have been engaged to prevent such incidents in future.
Videos are viral on social media
On Thursday afternoon, food for over 400 students was prepared in the mess. After discovering a rat in the food, none of the students ate it. Those who had already eaten a little vomited, causing an uproar throughout the IIT campus. Videos and photos of the incident are now going viral on social media. Observers are commenting that if the kitchen of an institute like IIT is unsafe, the situation in the rest of the city must be even worse.
Superficial cleaning is done in the campus
Sources from the IIT campus revealed that only superficial cleaning is performed, leaving the kitchen in poor condition. With food prepared three times daily for over 400 students, the lack of cleanliness results in dirt and rats spreading everywhere. Despite several letters being sent to the institute management, no action has been taken to address the cleanliness of the kitchen.
