New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, was pulled up by the Supreme Court on Friday. Slamming him for his irresponsible remarks on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, it said that freedom fighters of the country must not be mocked.
“Let’s not mock our freedom fighters”, the top court said during the hearing. It, however, stayed criminal proceedings against him in a case that was earlier lodged in Uttar Pradesh for his remarks. The bench which consisted of justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan also asked him not to make any such statements in the future. Rahul Gandhi was represented by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi in the court.
The bench asked whether Rahul Gandhi knew that even Mahatma Gandhi used words like “your faithful servant” during his communications with the Britishers. The top court had earlier issued Nripendra Pandey, the complainant in the case, and the Uttar Pradesh Government on Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a response from them.
Rahul Gandhi had moved SC challenging Allahabad HC order
Recently, the Congress leader had moved the apex court challenging the Allahabad High Court order, which refused to quash the summons against him in the case. A case was lodged against him under various penal provisions, offenses like ‘promoting enmity between classes’ and ‘public mischief’. During his Bharat Jodo Yatra on November 17, 2022, he commented Savarkar at a rally in Akola district of Maharashtra, which led to controversy.
