Landslides, floods wreak havoc in Tripura, kill 10; Amit Shah rushes NDRF teams for rescue work

Agartala: Multiple landslides and flood-related incidents in Tripura since Sunday have left a trail of destruction in the state, leaving at least 10 people dead and one missing. The northeastern state witnessed as many as 1,900 landslides causing disruption in road connectivity. According to an official statement, at least 32,750 people have taken shelter in 330 relief camps due to heavy rainfall.

“Due to excessive rainfall since Sunday, the water level in all major rivers has already crossed the danger mark flooding several areas. Ten people killed in landslides and flood-related incidents since Sunday. Altogether 32,750 people have taken shelter in 330 relief camps”, a government release said.

As many as four additional NDRF teams were rushed to the state to assist in the rescue operations after Chief Minister Manik Saha sought assistance from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), NDRF, central paramilitary forces including Assam Rifles are deployed in affected areas for rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts for heavy rainfall on Thursday.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, the Chief Minister said the flood in the state was “unprecedented”. “Unprecedented flood in the state. We are monitoring the situation closely. District Magistrates have been asked to render all possible help to the affected people,” he said.

Centre rushes NDRF teams to Tripura for rescue work

The Union Home Minister earlier today spoke to the Chief Minister and took stock of the flood situation in the state. In a post on X, Shah said that the Modi government firmly stands with people of Tripura during this “hour of crisis”.  He further said that NDRF teams, boats and helicopters have been sent to the state for relief and rescue work.

“The Centre is rushing teams of NDRF, apart from boats and helicopters, to the state to assist the local government in relief and rescue operations. Assured of all possible assistance from the Centre as and when required,” the post read.
