Land-for-jobs case: Sanctions to prosecute Lalu Yadav obtained, CBI tells Delhi court

New Delhi: The Central bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday told a Delhi court that it has obtained the requisite sanctions from authorities concerned to prosecute former railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in a corruption case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs scam.

The central agency informed Special Judge Vishal Gogne this during the hearing on the corruption case registered by the CBI. Besides Lalu Prasad Yadav, names of his various family members, including his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi and former Bihar deputy chief minister and his son Tejashwi Yadav.

CBI urged court to grant 15 more days to obtain sanctions for other accused

The CBI informed the court that that there were around 30 other accused in the corruption case for whom prosecution sanction was awaited, and urged the court to grant 15 more days to enable it to obtain the requisite documents. The court directed the agency to expedite the process to obtain the sanctions for the other accused.

The court has now posted the matter for further hearing on October 15.

What is the case?

As per the CBI, former Lalu Prasad Yadav, during his tenure as the railway minister during the first tenure of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government between 2004-2009, indulged in corruption for appointment of Group D substitutes in Indian Railways and the candidates were asked to transfer land as bribe in return for jobs in Indian Railways. It has further alleged that no advertisement or any public notice was issued for these appointments.

CBI filed main charge sheet in October 2022

The CBI had filed the main chargesheet in the case in October 2022 against 16 persons, including former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and their Rajya Sabha MP daughter Misa Bharti. The CBI named former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as an accused in the case for the first time in the second chargesheet.
