New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday (November 7) told a city court that it was awaiting requisite sanctions from authorities concerned to prosecute accused persons in a corruption case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs scam involving Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The CBI informed Special Judge Vishal Gogne that there were about 30 accused in the case against whom the prosecution sanctions were awaited and the agency sought 15 more days to obtain the requisite sanctions.
Court asked CBI to expedite process to obtain sanction
The court asked the CBI to expedite the process and directed it to submit the requisite sanctions by November 26, when the matter will be heard next.
The CBI had earlier informed the court that it had obtained the requisite sanction from the authorities concerned to prosecute Lalu Prasad Yadav in the case.
What is the case?
The CBI has alleged that Lalu Prasad Yadav, during his tenure as the railway minister during the period between 2004-2009 indulged in corruption for appointment of Group D substitutes in Indian Railways. It has alleged that the candidates were asked to transfer land as bribe in return for jobs in Indian Railways and no advertisement or any public notice was issued for these appointments.
The CBI had registered the case on May 18, 2022 against Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others, including his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi, two daughters, unidentified public servants and private persons.
CBI filed main chargesheet in October 2022
The CBI had filed the main chargesheet in the case in October 2022 against 16 persons, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and their Rajya Sabha MP daughter Misa Bharti. The CBI named former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as an accused in the case for the first time in the second chargesheet.
