New Delhi: A sudden gush of water erupted in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer when a borewell was being dug in Taragarh village. The pressure of water was so high that it submerged the nearby fields and the machinery that was used for drilling the borewell on Saturday.
The geological event has caused panic in the area with some claiming divine miracle while others attributing scientific reasons for the event. The drilling was being conducted in the canal area of Mohangarh at a depth of around 850-feet.
Emergence of Saraswati river?
The incident has aroused curiosity among many as the event took place in the desert region. The water level rose for at least 2 days before things went normal. The videos of the incident has gone viral on social media. Some users also started linking the incident to the emergence of the mythical Saraswati river.
What scientists say about the event
Dr. Narayan Das Inkhiya, a Senior Ground Water Scientist and Incharge of Rajasthan Ground Water Board Department, explains the event in simple terms. Dr Das said, “Generally, the groundwater is found in a confined condition in Jaisalmer. This situation took place due to artesian condition (a condition where confined groundwater rises above the ground’s surface and flows freely without pumping) when the drilling breaks the protected layer causing extreme pressure, forcing the water gush out to the surface.”
Dr Das said this condition went on for two days and the water inflow stopped due to maintenance of static water level. As of now, the water flow is normal, the scientist told ANI.
