Krishna Janmashtami: Festivities began across India as devotees throng temples

New Delhi: Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha or the eighth day of the month of Bhadrapada. It is believed that the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Krishna was born on this day.

The festival is celebrated across the country with places like Mathura and Vrindavan witness special celebrations because of mythological associations with Lord Krishna.

Early festivities in Mathura

The festivities in Mathura began on Sunday and according to reports, will continue till Thursday.

The festival of Janmashtami will be celebrated on the midnight of 26 August in all the major temples including Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura, while Janmashtami will be celebrated on the night of 27 August in Banke Bihari temple of Vrindavan.

Krishna Janmasthan temple to remain open for 20 hours

The Krishna Janmasthan temple will be open for 20 hours today for the convenience of pilgrims.

Meanwhile, festivities began in temples across the country on Monday, with devotees making beelines around them.

Visuals of devotees dancing and celebrating Krishna Janmashtami have flooded the social media.
