Kota: Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar attributed student suicides in Kota partly to “love affairs” during a press interaction on Saturday. He urged parents to stay alert and avoid putting excessive academic pressure on their children. Kota, a well-known centre for coaching institutes, has seen four student suicides this year after 17 such cases in 2024, PTI reported.
Addressing the media after a programme in Bundi, where SVAMITVA land ownership cards were distributed, Dilawar, who also oversees the Panchayati Raj department, commented on the tragic occurrences in Kota. In his statement, Dilawar spoke of the importance of parental awareness. He said that undue academic pressure can lead to severe consequences, including depression and suicide, especially when students are forced to pursue careers against their interests.
Peer pressure, love affairs cited as factors
He said that while coaching centres might have minimal direct impact, peer pressure and comments about academic rankings could greatly affect students’ mental health. That apart, he said that some suicides might be linked to romantic relationships. Dilawar concluded by saying that parents must pay closer attention to their children’s daily lives and routines to stop them from taking misguided paths.
17-year-old dies by suicide
Just days before the JEE, a 17-year-old from Bundi died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, marking the fourth such case this year. Living with his grandmother and cousin for three years, he had been preparing independently for the exam after a previous failed attempt. His family was shocked by the incident. They said he was a diligent student. Police are investigating possible study-related stress and his parents have decided to donate his eyes.
