Kolkata: Kolkata’s public transport infrastructure has taken a huge step forward with the successful trial run of the Noapara-Airport Metro route on January 25, 2025. The 7.04 km stretch of the Yellow Line marked a crucial milestone in the metro extension, which is set to be fully operational by mid-2025.
The new route will connect Noapara to Jai Hind Biman Bandar (Kolkata Airport), offering a faster, more convenient option for thousands of daily commuters. The trial run began at Noapara at 12:09 pm, with stops at Dum Dum Cantonment and Jessore Road before reaching the airport metro station at 12:31 pm. The return journey started at 1:57 pm and reached Noapara by 2:21 pm. The route, featuring four stations—Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road and Jai Hind Biman Bandar—includes both underground and elevated sections, with 1.8 km underground and 5.23 km elevated on viaducts.
Faster commute, less congestion
The new metro line will drastically reduce travel time for those commuting to the airport and ease traffic congestion in Kolkata’s northern suburbs. For residents near Dum Dum Cantonment and Jessore Road, the metro offers quicker, more reliable access to the city’s metro network. The underground and viaduct sections will also minimise disruption to the city’s existing infrastructure.
The successful trial run is seen as a major step toward easing Kolkata’s traffic woes, offering commuters a safe, air-conditioned alternative to crowded roads. The metro will improve punctuality and provide a more reliable transport option for those heading to work or other important destinations.
Enhanced connectivity, improved efficiency
With the metro set to operate by mid-2025, officials are confident that it will enhance the city’s public transport system and become a vital link between the northern suburbs and the airport. As further trials and inspections are conducted, the Noapara-Airport Metro route is expected to become a key part of Kolkata’s Yellow Line, delivering improved connectivity and efficiency for commuters across the city.
