New Delhi: The rape and murder of a second-year post graduate trainee (PGT) doctor of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has sparked outrage among the medical fraternity and the common people. and urgent calls for justice across India. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded a swift action and and enhanced safety measures for healthcare professionals. An accused arrested in the case has been sent to 14-day police custody. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded death penalty for the accused.

IMA demands urgent action

The IMA has issued a stern 48-hour deadline to authorities for a thorough investigation and the immediate arrest of those responsible. They have also demanded enhanced safety measures for doctors, particularly women, at medical facilities. The association has warned of nationwide protests if their demands are not met within the given time frame.

Accused sent to 14-day police custody

A Kolkata court has sent the accused in the case to police custody for 14 days. The suspect, who faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape and murder, was arrested based on evidence collected by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

West Bengal CM to seek death penalty

Describing the incident as one of the most heinous crimes, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to pursue the death penalty for the accused. She has also instructed that the case be expedited through a fast-track court. Banerjee has assured the protesting doctors that her govt would ensure a fair investigation in the case.

Police commissioner ensures maximum penalty for perpetrator

Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday said that he would ensure that the accused faces the highest possible punishment. He confirmed that an SIT has been established to oversee the investigation. Goyal further added that if required the investigation could be handed over to another agency to maintain public trust.

Autopsy report confirms sexual assault

The preliminary autopsy results have confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered. Her body also bore signs of physical trauma.
