Kolkata: The work at Kolkata Metro’s New Garia-Airport (Orange line) is in full swing and is near conclusion. The basic work for underground tunnels alongside the median of VIP Road has been completed. the line is being constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL).
The company, which has recently built a new stretch of road space for the Kolkata-bound traffic, has approached the authorities for the rejig of the existing road block, ‘The Times of India’ reported. The Kolkata traffic police are expected to hold a five-day trial next week before the site of the metro work is handed over for the next phase of construction work, ‘The Times of India’ reported.
Constructing of the line split into three phases
Importantly, the RVNL has split the construction of the line into three phases to avoid congestion on the VIP Road, which connects Kolkata with the airport. It has ducked the metro corridor underground. The construction company Afcons has been given the task of completing a 300m ramp and 500m of twin tunnels.
Work for the first phase started in April
The work for the first phase had started earlier this year in April. It had also cordoned off the middle of VIP Road after creating road space on AAI land. Notably, it was after the completion of the first phase that the RVNL had approached the traffic police for the rejigging of the traffic block, the company had once again created the compensatory road space on the land, the report added.
The company is also all set to start digging piles for ramp construction, beyond Pier 846, as it is here that the viaduct is required to end. Because of this, barricading is being extended towards Kaikhali.
