New Delhi: A crucial meeting of the Mahayuti (BJP, Shiv Sena – Shinde faction, and NCP – Ajit Pawar) scheduled for today in Mumbai has been postponed after caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde unexpectedly left for his village in Satara. According to sources, the meeting will now likely take place on Sunday, December 1.
According to reports, the BJP legislature party meeting will be held on December 1, where, in the presence of two observers, the Chief Minister’s name will be announced. There is also speculation that the BJP might consider a Maratha leader for the top post. Following this meeting, a joint Mahayuti session will be convened.
Mahayuti leaders meet Shah in Delhi
Earlier, on Thursday night, Shinde, along with Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda. Shinde had a private, half-hour discussion with Shah during the meeting.
Reports suggest that the high command has offered Shinde either the position of Deputy Chief Minister or a central ministerial role. Should Shinde opt for a central ministry, another leader from his faction could be appointed as Deputy Chief Minister.
Shinde might not accept deputy CM position
Shinde has reportedly handed over the list for portfolio distribution to Amit Shah, with plans to give the BJP time to make a final decision, which led to his departure for his village. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat said that if Shinde refuses the deputy CM position, another leader from the party would take on the role. He expressed doubt that Shinde would accept the deputy position, emphasising that it would not be suitable for someone who has already served as Chief Minister.
The BJP is also reportedly considering Maratha leaders for the Chief Minister’s post, given the significant number of Maratha legislators in the 288-seat assembly. However, sources indicate that if RSS exerts pressure, Fadnavis is still the likely candidate for the top job.
