New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking assurance that the Centre will not waive off loans of wealthy industrialists from now on and would rather do it for farmers and the middle-class people of the country.
He said waving off such loans of the middle class and farmers would reap many benefits such as a reduction in tax rates.
“Prime Minister should declare that no rich person’s loan will be waived off. If you want to waive off, then waive off farmers’ loans, and middle-class’ home loans. This money will benefit the middle-class a lot,” he said in the letter.
Kejriwal argued that waiving loans for the wealthy would allow the government to lower tax rates. “I have calculated that if such loans are not waived, tax rates could be halved. A person earning Rs 12 lakh annually ends up paying their entire salary in taxes—this is the burden on the middle class,” he wrote.
As the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections approach, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to implement a new strategy aimed at retaining its traditional slum vote bank, a key pillar of its support base.
