New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Friday put forward a proposal to provide homes to government employees on easy monthly instalments. The initiative, which is initially targeted at sanitation workers, will later be expanded to cover all government employees.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal emphasised the dire situation faced by sanitation workers, particularly those employed in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) areas. These workers, who are essential to the city’s cleanliness, currently reside in government-provided accommodation during their service. However, after retirement, they are forced to vacate their homes, unable to afford the high property prices or rents in Delhi, leaving them and their families vulnerable.
Kejriwal’s letter to PM Modi
He further said that he has also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. He has requested the PM to provide land to the Delhi government for constructing homes for government employees.
“I want to draw your attention to a very important issue concerning the sanitation workers employed in the NDMC and MCD areas. These workers are the backbone of our city’s cleanliness system. During their service, they reside in government-provided accommodation. However, after retirement, they are required to vacate these houses. They are unable to purchase their own homes or afford the high rents in Delhi, leaving them and their families in a precarious situation,” Arvind Kejriwal said.
He further appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide land to the Delhi government to construct affordable housing for sanitation workers, which would be financed through easy monthly instalments. “Since land-related matters in Delhi fall under the purview of the central government, I request that the central government provide land to sanitation workers at concessional rates. The Delhi government can construct houses on this land for them, and the workers can repay the cost of these houses to the government in easy instalments,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal condemns attack on his vehicle
Earlier this week, Kejriwal had written another letter to the Prime Minister, requesting a subsidy for metro rides for Delhi students. His proposal suggested that the Delhi and Central governments share the cost of the subsidy equally.
In a separate incident, Kejriwal condemned an alleged attack on his vehicle during election rally on Saturday. The AAP claimed that BJP’s New Delhi candidate Parvesh Verma’s “goons” were responsible for the attack. “The people of Delhi have never witnessed such violent campaigning, including an attempt on a former chief minister’s life. This is their way of campaigning because they are losing,” said Kejriwal. He dismissed Verma’s claim that he would lose the New Delhi seat by 20,000 votes, calling it a “dream”.
