Kausani: Kausani, a renowned tourist destination in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district, still resonates with the presence of Mahatma Gandhi, who visited for the first time in 1929. The locals named the bungalow where Gandhi stayed “Anasakti Ashram,” inspired by his book Anasakti Yoga.
Mahatma Gandhi was so captivated by the beauty of Kausani during his visit in 1929 that he called it the “Switzerland of India”. The picturesque landscapes and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Trisul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli, reminded him of the Swiss scenery.
Gandhi stayed here for 14 days extending his two days visit
During his visit to Kumaon, Mahatma Gandhi was so captivated by the splendour of the Himalayan range that he extended his stay by 14 days. Kausani’s Dak bungalow, which belonged to a tea garden owner at the time, became his home. Initially agreeing to stay for just two days, Gandhi was enchanted by the view of the Himalayas during his first morning yoga session and famously referred to Kausani as the “Switzerland of India.” It is also said that in later years, whenever his health deteriorated, he would head to Kausani for recuperation.
Bapu started writing a book and finished it within 14 days
Apart from natural beauty lying around, the peace at this place inspired Mahatma Gandhi to write a book ‘Anasakti Yoga’ in his 14 days long stay. “Anasakti Yoga” by Mahatma Gandhi is a profound commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. Gandhi translated the verses of the Gita and presented them as a guide to selfless action, which he termed “Anasakti Yoga” or the “Gospel of Selfless Action”. This work reflects Gandhi’s interpretation of the Gita, emphasizing the importance of detachment and selfless service in one’s life.
Dak bungalow in Kausani was transformed into a museum
In 1966, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Sucheta Kriplani, handed over the dak bungalow to the Uttar Pradesh Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Fund, renaming it ‘Anasakti Ashram Kausani’ after Gandhiji’s book. This ashram houses a collection of memorabilia, books, and photographs related to Gandhi’s life. It also features a small prayer area where Gandhi Darshan and prayer meetings are held every morning and evening. The ashram includes statues of Gandhiji’s three monkeys and is surrounded by serene tea gardens. A large board in the parking area provides detailed information about Gandhi’s family, from his great-grandfather to his grandsons.
Gandhi’s visit was aimed to strengthen the national movement at the regional level
Mahatma Gandhi visited the Kumaon region in Uttarakhand in June 1929, spending time in Kausani and Nainital. He came here for the first time after witnessing the success of the movement against the coolie begar system, aiming to strengthen the national movement at the regional level. During his 22-day visit, Gandhi delivered speeches at 26 locations across Kumaon, but he spent most of his time in Kausani.
Bapu’s memories are still alive at this place
In Nainital, Gandhi’s visit on June 13, 1929, was marked by a significant public gathering. His presence and speeches inspired many, including a large number of women who came out to support the freedom struggle. After this visit, the dak bungalow in Kausani was transformed into a museum dedicated to Bapu’s memories. Freedom fighters from Kumaon would come here to draw inspiration and strength. Even today, this place evokes the presence of Bapu.
