New Delhi: A fierce internal battle is brewing within the Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the party gears up for organisational polls. The conflict pits the factions led by MLA Basangouda Yatnal and state BJP president B Y Vijayendra, intensifying ahead of crucial decisions from the party’s high command.
The Yatnal faction has been actively lobbying in Delhi, meeting with senior party leaders to advocate for a leadership change in the state unit. They have hinted at imminent positive developments, fueling speculation about a potential replacement for Vijayendra. Former Union Minister G M Siddeswara, alongside Yatnal and Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, cryptically suggested “good news” is forthcoming from the party’s high command.
“The high command will give good news. You can understand what it will be ” Siddeswara said.
Adding to the intrigue, former state minister B Sriramulu has emerged as a possible successor to Vijayendra, son of former CM BS Yediyurappa. This development follows a reported rift between Sriramulu and Vijayendra after a core committee meeting in January, indicating a strategic shift in the internal power dynamics.
“I am ready to fulfil the role (of state BJP chief) if the party gives me a chance. I will put an end to factionalism in the state unit and ensure that we win 150 seats in the 2028 Assembly polls,” Sriramulu said.
Meanwhile, the Vijayendra faction is scheduled to meet in Bengaluru on February 12th to discuss the potential election for the state BJP chief’s post. Former state minister M P Renukacharya expressed confidence in Vijayendra’s continued leadership, warning that his removal would severely impact the BJP’s performance in the upcoming elections.
Sources within the BJP indicate that elections for the state president’s post are imminent, with both camps actively consolidating support for their preferred candidates. However, the high command’s ultimate decision remains to be seen.
Sriramulu’s past political journey has been marked by both successes and controversies. After a period of conflict with the BJP, during which he formed the BSR Congress which is said to have hurt BJP’s chances in many seats, he rejoined the party and has since occupied various positions. His recent performance in elections has been mixed.
