51st anniversary of the unification of Karnataka
Every year on November 1st, Karnataka commemorates Kannada Rajyotsava, a day dedicated to recognising the state’s rich history, culture, art, and language. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the unification of Karnataka, which was officially renamed on November 1, 1973.
The celebration of Kannada Rajyotsava is not just a local affair; it resonates globally with Kannadigas around the world. This month-long festival is a common occasion for Kannadigas to honour their language and its importance in their daily lives. The spirit of “Nudi Kannada, Naḍe Kannada, Usiru Kannada” (Language is Kannada, Life is Kannada) echoes throughout the celebrations.
Protests planned in Marathi-speaking areas
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) has organised a ‘black day’ rally today to coincide with Kannada Rajyotsava, raising concerns about potential clashes with law enforcement, according to a Times of India report.
The rally, led by former MLA Manohar Kinekar and Deepak Dalavi, is encouraging Marathi-speaking individuals to participate in a silent protest that will begin at Sambhaji Garden on Mahadwar Road and culminate in a gathering at Maratha Mandir. According to reports, MES has also planned similar protests in other locations, including Khanapur and Nippani.
