New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has found herself embroiled in another controversy for his remarks on now-repealed three farm laws with the Opposition accusing the BJP of using her as proxy to bring back the contentious laws. Ranaut’s own party distanced itself from her remark and said that it was her personal statement and doesn’t depict BJP’s view on the farm bills.
The Congress on Tuesday shared on X an undated video of the Mandi MP in which she was heard saying that the farm laws that have been repealed should be brought back.
“The laws in farmers’ interest be brought back. Farmers should themselves demand this so that there is no hindrance to their prosperity. Farmers are a pillar of strength in India’s progress. Only in some states, they had objected to farm laws. I appeal with folded hands that farm laws should be brought back in the interest of farmers,” she purportedly says in the video in Hindi.
Congress’ sharp attack at BJP
Hitting out at Ranaut, the Congress alleged that the ruling party was making efforts to bring back the three laws that were repealed in 2021. The party said, “More than 750 farmers of the country were martyred, only then did the Modi government wake up and these black laws were withdrawn.” It further said that the “black laws” will never return, no matter how hard Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his MPs try.
‘Not authorised to make such statement’
Meanwhile, the BJP condemned Ranaut’s remarks and said that she was not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of the party. BJP’s spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, “On the social media platforms, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s statement on the farm bills that was withdrawn by the central government, is going viral. I want to make it clear that this statement is a personal statement of her. Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of BJP, and it doesn’t depict BJP’s view on the farm bills. We condemn this statement.”
The three laws were repealed in November 2021 after farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh staged a large-scale protests.
