Imphal: Justice D Krishnakumar was on Friday sworn in as the eighth Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Justice D Krishnakumar in the swearing-in ceremony held in Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
Justice D Krishnakumar has replaced Justice Siddharth Mridul, who demitted office on on Thursday upon attaining the age of 62.
Centre on Wednesday notified appointment of Justice D Krishnakumar
The Centre had on Wednesday (November 20) announced the appointment of Justice D Krishnakumar as the new chief justice of the Manipur High Court following a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium on November 18.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice D Krishnakumar, Judge, Madras High Court as Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Siddharth Mridul, present Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur on 21.11.2024. I convey my best wishes to him,” Union Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had written on Wednesday on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) announcing the elevation of Justice D Krishnakumar.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh congratulated the new Chief Justice
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh congratulated Justice D Krishnakumar on his new role as the High Court Chief Justice and said that he was looking forward to work with him in furthering the cause of justice.
“I look forward to working with you in furthering the cause of justice and ensuring that every citizen’s rights are safeguarded and respected. May your tenure be filled with wisdom, progress, and positive transformation for the people of Manipur,” the Manipur Chief Minister wrote in in a post on social media platform X.
Justice D Krishnakumar was appointed as a Judge of Madras High Court in 2016
Justice D Krishnakumar was appointed as a Judge of the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016 and he is due to retire on May 21, 2025. He was the senior-most puisne Judge in the Madras High Court and belongs to a Backward Community. Before his elevation as a Madras High Court judge, he had extensive practice in civil, constitutional and service matters in the high court, with specialization in constitutional law.
