Kolkata: A Sealdah court today found Sanjay Roy guilty in the Kolkata rape and murder case, where the prime accused, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was convicted over five months after the incident shocked the nation. The victim’s father, overwhelmed by emotion, broke down in the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
Roy was convicted under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1), which address the penalties for murder. The horrific case involved the brutal killing of a 31-year-old doctor, whose semi-naked body was discovered on August 9 last year on the third floor of the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy was taken into custody the following day.
Sentencing on Monday
During the court session, Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge, delivered the judgment, prompting the victim’s father to express gratitude, saying that the judge had “honoured the faith” placed in him. The court has scheduled the sentencing for Monday.
Roy maintains innocence
In his defence, Roy said that he is innocent. He said that he was being “framed.” Addressing the court, the 33-year-old said, “I have not done this. Why are those who did it being allowed to go?” The judge assured him that he would be allowed to speak on Monday. Roy, who is currently detained at Presidency Jail in Kolkata, has consistently denied involvement in the crime, insisting that he is a victim of false accusations.
