New Delhi: In a shocking case of medical negligence, Dr Anjum Nazir is under intense public scrutiny after a grave case of alleged medical malpractice, in which she mistakenly removed a woman’s uterus instead of conducting an ENT procedure. The incident, which occurred at Hakeem Sonuallah Hospital in Sopore, has led to widespread outrage, with many demanding a permanent ban on the doctor’s ability to practice privately.
On Thursday, the Jammu and Kashmir government took swift action, suspending two doctors involved in the alleged medical error at the private hospital in Sopore. The woman, who had been admitted for ear surgery, underwent the wrong procedure. In response, the hospital’s operation theatre was sealed.
An official order confirmed the suspension of Dr Anjum Nazir, Consultant Gynaecologist at SDH Sopore, and Dr Tariq Ahmad Dar, Medical Officer (Diploma in Anesthesia) at DH Bandipora. Both doctors are also prohibited from engaging in private practice throughout Jammu and Kashmir until further notice. Apart from that, the operation theatre of Hakeem Sonuallah Hospital will remain sealed pending the investigation’s conclusion.
5 doctors suspended
In December last year, five doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri were suspended after the death of a pregnant woman, Razim Akhter, who died on Sunday. Akhter, 35, from Badhaal Kotranka, was five-and-a-half months pregnant and had been admitted with complications after being referred from a Kandi hospital. The suspended doctors, from the Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Casualty departments, were on night duty in the Emergency Ward during her treatment. Two other doctors and eight staff members received show-cause notices. Political leaders, including MLA Javed Iqbal Choudhary and former MLA Qamar Hussain, demanded accountability. Akhter had lost three children just the week before.
