Srinagar: A day after being sworn in, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his cabinet passed a resolution for the restoration of the statehood of the Union Territory. The chief minister is also likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the matter.
The first meeting of the cabinet was attended by cabinet members and senior officials of the state. Among those who were also part of the meeting included National Conference (NC) Treasurer Shammi Oberoi, Political Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and senior NC leader Rattan Lal Gupta
Omar Abdullah stresses the importance of respectful conduct
The draft of the resolution has already been prepared, news agency PTI reported. Omar Abdullah will travel to New Delhi in a few days to hand over the draft of the resolution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urge him to restore Statehood to J&K.
Meanwhile, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah expressed his confidence that statehood would be restored in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters, the former Chief Minister said that his party raised the issue of restoration of statehood earlier too.
‘Restoration of Article 370 will take time’
When asked about the restoration of Article 370, he observed that same would take time as the party will be required to go back to the courts and present the case.” He added that the Omar Abdullah-led government would work to address the problems faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Farooq Abdullah further said that the J&K Government would work to achieve was was promised in the NC manifesto and take the Union Territory towards the path of peace and progress.
