‘Jat-Dalit pact’: Dushyant Chautala, Chandra Shekhar Azad join hands for Haryana assembly polls

New Delhi: Former Haryana deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) on Tuesday announced a pre-poll alliance with Chandra Shekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) for the upcoming assembly polls in the state.

The voting for the 90 seats of Haryana assembly will take place on October 1 and the counting on October 4.

JJP to contest 70 seats, Azad Samaj Party 20

JJP will contest on 70 seats and the Azad Samaj Party on 20. Both Dushyant Chautala and Chandra Shekhar promised to fight for the rights and welfare of the farmers.

In a post on ‘X’ Dushyant Chautala welcomed the alliance. “The alliance of Jannayak Janta Party and Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) was officially announced in a press conference held in Delhi today. Jannayak Janta Party is going to contest elections together on 70 seats of Haryana and Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) is going to contest elections together on 20 seats of Haryana. The coming together of farmers and laborers will prove to be a strong step towards building a better future for Haryana,” read his post on ‘X’.

Not the only Jat-Dalit alliance in Haryana

The coming together of the JJP and Azad Samaj Party is not the only Jat-Dalit alliance in Haryana; the Indian National Lok Dal and BSP have also formed an alliance for the upcoming polls.

In 2019, JJP had formed a post-poll alliance with BJP after the saffron party fell short of majority mark.

The Dushyant Chautala’s party is in free fall since it was dumped by its ally in March this year. Six of its 10 legislators have left the party since.

‘Contest between BJP and Congress’

In March, Nayab Singh Saini replaced Manohar Lal Khattar as the head of new government in the state. Khattar was later elected to Lok Sabha from Karnal and was made Union minister in Modi 3.0.

Meanwhile, former state home minister Anil Vij has claimed that regional parties were “now finished and the contest is only with the Congress, and we will easily defeat the Congress because they have committed so many sins.”
