On July 8, terrorists ambushed a patrol of the Indian Army in the Kathua district Machedi area leading to the killing of five soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO). A week later on July 15, four soldiers, including an army captain, were killed during an encounter with terrorists in Doda district’s Desa forests.
Similarly, on June 9, terrorists had targeted a pilgrimage bus in Reasi, which resulted in the killing of 11 passengers. The attack occurred the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for his third successive term in the national capital.

It may be noted here that on July 26, PM Modi visited the Kargil War Memorial in Ladakh on the 26th anniversary of the Kargil War. During his visit, the prime minister had warned Pakistan that its ‘nefarious plans’ would never succeed.
