Jammu and Kashmir: 3 terrorists killed in 2 separate operations in Kupwara, claims Army

Kupwara: The Army on Thursday said that at least 3 terrorists were killed in 2 separate operations on Kupwara. They said that they had specific inputs about terrorists trying to infiltrate into the country and therefore a joint operation was launched with the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The operation was launched on the night of August 28-29, 2024, said Army officials.

Suspicious movement observed

The Army said that the operation was launched in the general area Machhal, Kupwara after they observed suspicious movement in bad weather. The Army was forced to open fire after the terrorists did not respond to the surrender warning. Both sides engaged in firing and it is believed that at least 2 terrorists were killed in the operation. As of now the operation is on as it is believed that more terrorists might be hiding in the area.

In the second case, the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched an anti-infiltration operation in general area Tangdhar, Kupwara. This was also launched on the same date as the operation in Machhal, that is August 28-29 night. In this case, it is believed that 1 terrorist was gunned down. This operation is also currently going on and a search for the dead bodies or more hiding terrorists will be launched soon, said security personnel.

The Army said that they have not been able to retrieve the bodies of the terrorists due to the bad weather. Once the weather clears a search operation will be launched, they added.

Army releases statement on Kupwara operations

The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army released a statement regarding the 2 anti-terror operations. They said, “Based on intelligence inputs with respect to likely infiltration bids, a Joint Operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police on the intervening night of August 28-29 in the general area Machhal, Kupwara. The suspicious movement was observed in bad weather and was engaged with effective firing by own troops; two terrorists are likely to have been neutralised. The operation is in progress.”

Of late, terror activities have seen a rise in Jammu and Kashmir. Many Army operations have taken place in the past, in which several terrorists have been neutralised.
