Dublin: A university in Ireland introduced its first-ever influencer course after observing how it has become a common career option, especially among Gen Z. South East Technological University (SETU) in Carlow now has a four-year-long bachelor’s degree for those wanting to earn a living through social media platforms like YouTuber and TikTok.
Irene McCormick, the Course Director, said that the idea was born out of a summer crash course named “Digital Hustle” The classes launched by McCormick were conducted by TikTokers and received a mindblowing response. Consequently, McCormick spent two years developing a four-year programme for social media career aspirants. The “Content Creation and Social Media” began last month with its first batch of 15 students. These students will be taught a variety of subjects ranging from creative video-making to entrepreneurship.

Speaking about the course to AFP, McCormick stated, “Most of the students are already immersed in the digital space or working in it and want to expand their toolset and knowledge.” While McCormick believes that the art of influencing and content creation can be learned at home, the course will help add value by helping you practice and connect with your demographics.
“Of course, people want to make money from influencing, so we look particularly at person branding, how to monetise being influential over large online followings,” said McCormick.
Students who joined the unique course said that they hoped to turn their interests in varied fields into a career online that would make them money. They also claimed that the course would equip them with all the skills required to monetise their social media presence and create something bigger.
