New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Wednesday dedicate to the nation three naval combat assets including a submarine at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The three frontline naval combatants include INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer.
The inauguration of the three naval combatants marks a significant improvement in India’s naval firepower and realise the goal of country becoming a major player in defence manufacturing and maritime security.
Let’s have a look at the capability of battleship INS Surat
- INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project. According to officials, INS Surat ranks among the largest and most sophisticated destroyers in the world. The vessel has is indigenously developed by up to 75 per cent and is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon-sensor packages and advanced network-centric capabilities.
- The battleship is said to be the first vessel equipped with Artificial Intelligence. The ship was built at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). INS Surat is named after a city in Gujarat. The city is known for diamond cutting and polishing.
- INS Surat is continuation of Kolkata-class (Project 15A) project of building guided missile destroyers. The new ship has improved design and capabilities including modern weapons package.
- The new battleship would also be able to operate a host of helicopters including Sea King, MH-60R, Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) in day and night operations.
- INS Surat will have a top speed of up to 30 knots and is powered by a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system. COGAG is a system that uses multiple gas turbines to drive a vessel’s propellers.
- The battleship will have an operational range of over 7,500 kilometers.
