New Delhi: Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said that while Artificial Intelligence is spreading fast across the globe, the same will be used quite effectively in India. Expressing confidence that India will use AI quite effectively, he noted that youth and scientists have excellent knowledge of technology.
Speaking at the TV9 Network’s ‘What India Thinks Today’ Global Summit, he added that Chat GPT is just a small part of AI and that the industrial world used AI quite effectively in the last 10-15 years. “Due to this, productivity and maintenance practices have improved. AI also played an important role in Industrial safety norms. The AI use will further increase. AI is much beyond what we see today. We will have our own foundational model this year. There are two fundamental things in AI. One is mathematical algorithms, the other is engineering.”
India will take lead in Artificial Intelligence: Ashwini Vaishnaw
He added, “How you use the process depends on engineering. Our engineers are combining maths and engineering for AI and we will take the lead in that. One very important point I would like to point out is that while in other countries only some people and some companies had complete power, in our country PM Modi democratised the technology. Due to this.14,000 GPUs are available for those working for AI.”
The minister, while speaking on the spread of misinformation through social media in the country, noted that while the government is working to prevent the spread of misinformation through different platforms, there is also a need to create awareness among the people in the country. He added that the same can be done with the use of the IT act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“The misinformation campaign that is run against the country on social media is a big issue. The misinformation campaign is run by various kinds of people. We need to tackle the issue by creating awareness among the people of the country and with the use of the IT Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Also, we need to speak to all platforms to control the spread of misinformation,” he said.
On being asked whether OTT platforms in India will be regulated, he added that there is a law already in place for the same. Vaishnaw noted that it is important for society to take collective action on the same. “Every society has certain boundaries. The way we behave in our homes, outside our homes, or during any social functions, society defines norms everywhere. We must accept them. However, norms that are accepted in other countries may not be possible in India. We must have our own way,” he further said.
Ashwini Vaishnaw on Kunal Kamra controversy
Reacting to the ongoing Kunal Kamra controversy, he noted that those attacking the government on freedom of expression must read the constitution instead of holding them. “They should also note the restrictions imposed in the constitution, which was made when the Congress government was itself in power, when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister.”
When asked whether there is some kind of divide between Western culture and Indian culture when it comes to comedians, “Under which parameter will you compare the Western and Indian culture? If you go to the West, they consider burning their national flags as freedom of expression. Will anybody accept the same as freedom of expression in India? Nobody will. Nudity is the norm in the West. Will the same be accepted in Indian society? No. We need to keep safe our context, our culturally rich heritage, our civilisation, our ethos, our diversity, and our multiple languages. Our country is not geo-political country, but a geo-cultural one. The country has kept the people under the cultural framework for centuries.”
