New Delhi: India on Saturday voiced its concern regarding the escalating tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s attacks on Iran. In a statement, the ministry of external affairs said, “We are deeply concerned by the evolving escalation in West Asia and its ramifications for peace and stability in the region and beyond. We reiterate our call to all concerned to exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.”
“The ongoing hostilities are to nobody’s benefit, even as innocent hostages and civilian populations continue to suffer. Our Missions in the region are in contact with the Indian community,” the MEA statement added.
Israel launches retaliatory strikes on Iran
On Saturday, Israel launched attacks on military sites in Iran, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reporting that multiple jets conducted three waves of strikes before dawn, targeting missile factories and other locations. According to an AP report, Iran asserted that its air defences effectively thwarted the attack, although two soldiers were killed and some sites sustained “limited damage.”
Iran’s foreign ministry stated that the country is “entitled and obligated” to defend itself while also recognising its “responsibilities towards regional peace and security,” reflecting a more conciliatory tone compared to previous escalations.
Regional officials briefed by Tehran informed Reuters that several high-level meetings were convened to assess Iran’s potential response. One official noted that the damage was “very minimal” and confirmed that “several Revolutionary Guard bases inside Tehran and near the capital were targeted.”
Iran and Israel exchange blows
Iranian news outlets broadcast footage of passengers at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport, seemingly to convey that life continued normally. Local media reported explosions in the capital and nearby military bases over several hours, according to AP. Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari commented, “Iran attacked Israel twice, including in locations that endangered civilians, and has paid the price for it.”
