New Delhi: India and Qatar on Tuesday exchanged an agreement on the establishment of a strategic partnership
during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani at the Hyderabad House in Delhi.
The Amir of Qatar arrived in India on Monday evening for a two-day state visit. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier stated that the visit would provide “further momentum to our growing multifaceted partnership.”
Breaking protocol, PM Modi himself welcomed the Amir at the airport and warmly greeted him with a hug. “Went to the airport to welcome my brother, Amir of Qatar H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Wishing him a fruitful stay in India and looking forward to our meeting tomorrow,” Modi wrote in a post on X.
PM Modi and the Amir of Qatar held discussions at Hyderabad House, covering a range of bilateral issues. As part of the engagements, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, exchanged agreements.
Additionally, a revised agreement between India and Qatar for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion concerning income taxes was also exchanged. This agreement was formally exchanged between Qatar’s Prime Minister and India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, during the ceremony at Hyderabad House.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the bilateral talks “further cemented the deep and traditional relationship” between India and Qatar.
