New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting above-normal temperatures across most of India from March to May 2025, with the exception of southern peninsular India and isolated pockets of Northeast India. This upcoming summer season is expected to be significantly hotter than usual for much of the country.
According to the IMD, temperatures in March are anticipated to be above the normal maximum across most of the country. Above-normal minimum temperatures are also likely, except for parts of Northwest India and the South Peninsula, where normal minimum temperatures are expected.
The IMD forecasts an above-normal number of heatwave days across most regions, excluding Northeast India, extreme north India, and southwestern and southern peninsular India. Central India and the adjoining northern parts of the South Peninsula, along with parts of Northwest and East India, are expected to experience the most intense heatwave activity in March.
Meanwhile, India is expected to receive normal rainfall (83-117 per cent of Long Period Average – LPA) during March 2025. However, there will be regional variations. Above-normal rainfall is anticipated in parts of Peninsular India and neighboring regions of South Central India, while normal to below-normal rainfall is expected elsewhere.
While most of India is expected to experience above-normal temperatures, the southern parts of the Peninsular region and isolated areas in Northeast India are projected to have normal to below-normal maximum temperatures.
Following recent rainfall, Delhi is expected to experience mist on March 2 and 3, followed by strong surface winds on March 4 and 5. Temperatures will range between 14 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius. Specific areas within Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are expected to experience gusts of wind and light rainfall in the coming hours, according to a short-term warning issued by IMD.
