Security stepped up in West Bengal Tripura alert sounded in

New Delhi: The Border Security Force (BSF) has raised vigil along the India-Bangladesh frontier by enhancing border patrolling, responding to recent instability in Bangladesh and the potential for increased infiltration. This proactive measure involves intensified surveillance and patrols along vulnerable stretches, including rivulets and jungle areas, to counter any attempts at illegal crossings, News18 reported.

The heightened security comes amid a backdrop of recent tensions between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). In specific regions like Maldah and Sukhdevpur, the BSF encountered protests from the BGB during border fencing operations. Though these skirmishes were eventually resolved through diplomatic channels, the work remains stalled in Maldah. Similar protests occurred in Coochbehar, only concluding after direct BSF intervention.

Several high-level border meetings have taken place between the BSF and the BGB in an attempt to de-escalate tensions and find amicable solutions. BSF sources quoted by News18 expressed confidence that these diplomatic engagements will facilitate a resolution and enable the resumption of fencing activities.

Fencing the remaining unguarded sections of the border is now a top priority for the Indian government. Sources indicate that efforts are underway to quickly resolve the technicalities related to land acquisition, necessary for the continuation of the fencing project.

The BSF’s response isn’t limited solely to physical presence; it involves integrating community engagement with enhanced technological surveillance. Following an incident in Maldah where local villagers actively supported the BSF amidst BGB protests, the force plans to further strengthen relationships with border communities.

Technological improvements will also play a critical role. The BSF is utilizing advanced technology for monitoring, including night vision cameras and drones. These resources trigger automated alerts upon detecting any unauthorised border crossings, allowing for immediate response by the security forces. This integration of community engagement and technological advancements forms a comprehensive security strategy, designed to address the current volatile situation on the border and reduce vulnerabilities.
